ON

==Bridge, USS Excalibur - 1712 hours==

The Vulcan civilian stood not a meter away from him, but Thon and the other bridge officers were doing an admirable job of ignoring him. Thon's first instinct as a security officer was to remove the civilian from the bridge. Luckily Eliez Doran, the Trill science officer, was next to him. She'd explained that his name was Murok, and that he was the mission specialist for their current archaeological assignment. Murok didn't seem particularly thrilled at Kelter's choice of course, but as yet there had been no confrontation.

A gold-collared human jay-gee entered the bridge, and th'Zarath knew that Lani Rodgers stood before him before she announced her presence. The Andorian stood from where he'd been sitting at Mission Ops.

"Lieutenant Thon th'Zarath, your new Chief of Security," he said by way of introduction. "I'm sure by now you've heard of the recent unpleasantness with Rhian Kronenberg, the doctor's wife...I'm looking your help. I need any sort of advantage I can offer my department with the investigation into her death. Is there any way that the ship's avatar could be of use? Perhaps looking for unauthorized beam-ins, checking internal sensor logs, finding digital evidence of doors being forced...? I admit I'm not terribly familiar with her capabilities, but I'm open to suggestions." Thon didn't have to try to look genuinely in need.

"That's nothing a solid investigation crew couldn't handle," Lani replied. She was familiar with the death of the doctor's wife, but she thought it would was not something she would be a part of. "No disrespect," Lani lied, "but what I've discovered about the AI's capabilities is that it's a little superfluous. It won't give you any information you can't access yourself. Maybe analytical work is its strong suit, but as I said, it's nothing a solid team couldn't handle."

"Of course," Thon answered, his antennae drooping a bit. "Well, I admit most of the reason I wanted to see Cali work was to see her performance limits. But you seem a bit reluctant to deploy the AI on this operation. My department is fully capable of solving the crime, but doing so before the Excalibur reaches her destination may be another matter. We need every advantage to swiftly put an end to this situation, Lani. If there's anything Cali can offer us, I need to know about it." Thon was wondering if Cali was little more than a visual representation of the ship's computer, or if "she" had more independent, original "thought." His reading about the ship had focused on tactical specs and senior staff, and he had practically no experience with AIs.

Lani's expression stayed blank with a hint of annoyance. "There's nothing stopping you from requesting its help. This thing is more than capable of appearing and assisting multiple crew members at the same time. In terms of investigations, there's nothing that it can't tell you that an inquiry to the LCARS system can't answer itself. Sensor logs, scans, all that data is stored separately from this program, so it has to access it similar to you, albeit faster. Maybe if you physically need an extra set of hands, or are short staffed, but I don't see the purpose." Rodgers then added a courtesy, "Sir."

Th'Zarath cast a sidelong glance at the nearby Murok, who was now doing an admirable job of ignoring them. Letting out a noticeable sigh as his antennae twitched, Thon went on. "Too bad, Lieutenant. I'd hoped we would have a quick way out, but it looks like we'll have to do things the hard way. I imagine Deputy Jenkins will be pleased to hear that anyhow." Thon gave an apologetic smile, wondering if he'd gotten off on the wrong foot with the Operations Officer.

"Very well," was Lani's dry response. Seeing as how she was now on the bridge, and her introduction with the AI out of the way, she relieved the Vulcan and took ops herself. "If there's anything else you require, I'll be at my station."

Thon nodded acknowledgement, turning back to the Mission Ops screen. The natural volatility of his race swelled up within him, frustration at the plodding pace of murder investigations. Perhaps that was truly the heart of the matter. He was a warrior, trained by the Imperial Guard - or what was left of it in this day and age. But no, Thon reminded himself - he had made his choice. Starfleet was his life, his true calling, and he would continue to do things their way. That included delegating responsibility rather than always leading by example, and that meant allowing Jenkins and Dovilo to do their jobs for the time being. In the meantime, Thon walked over to Tactical to get acquainted with the station and with the eager young ensign at the controls. Excalibur was a big ship, and it would take some time to get used to.

USS Excalibur – Chief Medical Officer’s Quarters

Deputy Marshal Jeremiah Jenkins stood in the Chief Medical Officer’s Quarters yet again. Surrounding him were several Starfleet Security Officers. Each member of the team seemed confused, looking at each other. The Deputy Marshal was not immune, though he was doing his best to hide it, he was just as confused as the rest of the team.

One of the Security Officers turned towards another, “Do you remember why we were sent here?”

The other Security Officer shook his head, “I don’t even know whose room this is.”

To their surprise, Jenkins was the next to admit it, “I don’t either.”

The team backed out of the room slowly, Jenkins trying to remember their purpose. Turning the corner they nearly ran into a Vulcan male wearing traditional robes and carrying a golden staff. His head was shaven, but he wore a dark goatee that hung nearly to his waist. The unusual Vulcan was a shocking sight for the crew, except for Jenkins.

“Murok, fancy running into you down here,” stated Jenkins, still trying to piece things together.

The Vulcan responded, “I am on my way to your Science Lab. I wish to prepare myself for our visit to Jolar II.”

Jenkins studied the staff, “Fancy staff.”

“Thank you, Marshal. It is a Debrune Relic from Barradas III.”

One of the Security Officers spoke up, “What does it do?”

Though as a Vulcan he had rejected emotions, a hint of annoyance could be heard, “Nothing.”

With that, the Vulcan walked off, leaving the Security team, and Deputy Marshal Jenkins, still confused.

USS Excalibur – Bridge

Lieutenant Jonathan Wheeler sat in his chair next to Commander Elhyam’s Command Chair. He watched as the Bridge crew continued their work.

“Lieutenant Rodgers, what is our ETA for Jalor II? We should be there already.” asked the Executive Officer.

<Lieutenant Rodgers>

OOC: Alright folks, moving the story along. A few interesting twists thrown in though. For some unknown reason, no one can remember Kronenburg or his family. More important, they can’t remember the death of Kronenburg’s wife or of the investigation. Also forgotten is the desire to take our time getting to Jalor II.

USS Excalibur - Mess Hall

Olivia paused for a moment as she cleared some glasses from one of the tables. She'd just been listening to two of the officers talking about something. For some reason, though, she couldn't remember what it was. She stared at the glasses, but the subject still didn't come to mind. Curiously, the two officers seemed to have fallen silent as well.

"What were we just talking about?" The one finally asked.

"Damn if I can remember." The second admitted. "Hey, Rat, whatcha putting in these drinks?" He held up his glass.

"Nothing you didn't order." Olivia defended herself with an exaggerated huff. "Maybe you need to slow down a little."

The first officer laughed, scratching his head. "Yah, maybe we better call it quits while we're ahead."

"Either that or see if another glass helps." The second suggested, making his companion grin.

Olivia bopped them both on the head as she passed by. "If you two can't even remember your own conversation, you aren't getting anymore from my bar."

"Aw, c'mon, Rat."

"Get Synthehol from one of those dreadful machines in the lounges." She frowned to herself, though, as she continued cleaning up. It was one thing for the two officers to forget what they were discussing after a few glasses, but why was it that she couldn't remember either?

USS Excalibur – Bridge

Captain’s Log; We are now in orbit of Jalor II, a planet recently turned over to Federation control by the Romulan Star Empire during their recent tragedy. Our mission is to assist the planetary government in the transition, as well as establish a peaceful presence to the inhabitants. In addition to our main mission, we are visited by famous Vulcan Archeologist Murak and his team to study the ancient Debrune relics found on the planet.

Commander Jonathan Wheeler sat in the center chair of the USS Excalibur, the Command Chair. A busy crew all around him, nearly every station filled; except for his First Officer. He pressed a button on his command chair, activating the ship wide communications system.

“Attention all Senior Staff; Report to Mission Briefing at 0900 hours in the Conference Room. Doctor Murok, your presence is requested as well.”

Jonathan rose from his chair, walking towards the helm where a young Ensign was working the console.

The Commander spoke with a soft voice, “Ensign, keep an eye on their planetary defenses. Even though they are now technically members of the Federation, they are still Romulan and may still attack. Be ready to evade any attack.”

The Ensign nodded, “Aye sir.”

Jonathan looked at his gold pocket watch, a rare sight aboard a starship. It was already 0703, not much time to get ready for a Briefing. He stroked his long beard, time enough for a shave.

“Lieutenant th’Zarath, you have the Bridge.” He stated as he walked out of the bridge.

==USS Excalibur, Bridge==

“Lieutenant th’Zarath, you have the Bridge."

Thon blinked, his antennae wobbling. "Aye sir," he replied, composing himself. He had acted as duty officer before, of course - he had been Third Officer of the USS Jupiter prior to his arrival here. But the Jupiter was an Akira-class, and the USS Excalibur almost made her look like a runabout in comparison. As Wheeler walked to his Ready Room, Thon paced the bridge in a slow, easy circle. He had sat in command chairs before, but he'd never been in an Excalibur-class bridge. As he had two hours in command, the Andorian decided he might as well get to know the other stations.

Before he could study much in depth, Thon's commbadge chirped. "=/\=Chief Vithlani to Lieutenant th'Zarath."

"Go ahead, Chandra," he replied to his master-at-arms, examining the Environment station at the aft of the bridge.

"=/\= Sir, Lieutenant Dovilo is ready to depart but he seems to think there was something he should be staying for. We have no record of any further duties. Orders?"

Lt th'Zarath frowned thougtfully, resuming his circle of the bridge. Idar Dovilo, the Bolian Chief of Security he was replacing. There did seem to be something he should be staying for...but what?

"=/\=Lieutenant?" Vithlani prompted after a few moments.

Thon could think of no reason why he might be delaying Dovilo's departure. "Inform Mr Dovilo he may leave at his earliest convenience. One of the Type 9 shuttlecraft should be available for him to take to Starbase 147." He made eye contact with the Vulcan woman at Ops, who nodded affirmative as he passed her station.

"=/\= Very good, sir. Security out."

Still there was a nagging feeling that Dovilo was helping him out with something before disembarking...but if nobody could remember, it must not have been important.

Done dealing with his master-at-arms, th'Zarath turned to Tactical, where his gunner's mate had relieved him. Chief Petty Officer Ya-rei Xaghora, the Efrosian man who'd been part of his greeting party when coming aboard. He had known Vithlani for over two years, but had only just met Xaghora. He would need to test this man's skills. "Chief," Thon began, "I need you to keep an eye out for the sensor ghost we scanned upon entering the system. Launch a probe to triangulate with our own sensors, whatever specifications you believe are best. And signal Captain Petty to keep the Green Knights ready if anything comes up." They wouldn't be scrambling fighters unless absolutely needed, though, so as not to alarm the locals.

"Aye sir," was Chief Xaghora's only response. The Efrosian's hands instantly set to work.

Th'Zarath finished his meandering around the bridge, sitting in the command chair at last. Many questions about this star system had come up, and none of them would be answered by sitting down. But sometimes, all one could do was wait.

USS Excalibur – Conference Room

Commander Jonathan Wheeler sat at the end of the Conference Table, waiting for his crew. He stroked his chin, now bare from the earlier shave. He represented the entire Federation right now; he knew that his usual rough manner was not what was needed in diplomacy. Wheeler checked the time on his pocket watch; it was just moments before 0900.

The Chief Science Officer was the first to enter. Wheeler stood, greeting the Trill female.

“Lieutenant Doran, good to see you again. Go ahead, have a seat.” He stated, as he sat back down.

Eliez Doran sat down, and the two waited patiently for the next arrival.
